Summary

Paul gave advice based not on his own experience but on God's word, yet the captain and the shipowner did not listen to him. They ignored Paul's opinion and set sail, only to face a great disaster. This incident reminds us that we should pay attention to advice based on faith. Like Paul’s faith, we too must listen to God's word and make careful judgments.

"Sirs, I perceive," means to observe. It signifies looking closely, recognizing. That is what it means. Paul did not simply say this. It is natural for the centurion to listen to the captain and the shipowner. They are seasoned veterans of the sea. Just think about how much experience they have! Even if Paul had some sailing experience, it cannot be compared to that of the captain and the shipowner. Therefore, there was no reason for them to listen to Paul. If a church member asks me about business and I give advice, my counsel would not carry much weight because I am not a businessman. However, you must think carefully. There must have been a clear reason why Paul wanted to stay in Fair Havens. When Paul speaks, he speaks based on the word of God. It is not his personal opinion. He is not speaking from personal or experiential opinions. Look at Paul. Examine verse 25. Let’s go back. Therefore, take courage, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told. This is the essence of faith. That’s right. Confusion arose when things did not go as Paul had said. Friends, read Acts 27 from verse 12. Paul advised them to stay in Fair Havens, but they did not listen and set sail, leading to complete disaster. They lost all their cargo. That’s right. They arrived at the wrong place. Let’s go back to the verse I mentioned. He said, "Men, I believe it is better for us to stay in Fair Havens." I said this is not simply Paul’s personal opinion. He spoke based on faith. In verse 25, he also says, "I have faith in God." When he spoke in verse 10, he spoke based on faith in God. Beloved, you must remember this well. There are things we must understand through this word. Paul explains based on the word, but the listeners do not listen properly. They simply dismiss Paul as speaking only from his experience.
